What to Do With Unwanted Items in Norfolk

Norfolk is a county of real contrasts — the packed streets of Norwich and Great Yarmouth on one hand, the quieter market towns of Dereham and Thetford on the other, with King’s Lynn anchoring the west. Across all of it, roughly 910,000 people are clearing out wardrobes, sorting through bookshelves and wondering what to do with the kitchenware they no longer need. Our free doorstep charity collection service covers the whole county, operating across the GU, KT, RG, SL, SM or TW postcode areas, so wherever you are in Norfolk, we can come to you. You fill a bag, leave it on your doorstep, and we handle everything from there — no trips to a charity shop, no queuing, no heavy lifting.

What We Collect in Norfolk

We accept a genuinely broad range of good-condition household items. The full list covers clothing for adults and children, books, toys, kitchenware, linen, and general household items. If your children have grown out of their school uniform, their favourite toys or a pile of picture books, those items can all go in the bag. The same goes for the slow shift of a changing wardrobe — the jackets that no longer fit your style, the shoes that were a size too small and sat at the back of the cupboard — all welcome. Below is a snapshot of what we look for.

Clothing & Accessories

Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in good condition, including shoes, belts and scarves. Outgrown kids’ clothes are especially valuable — they’re often barely worn and exactly what another family needs.

Books

Fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, cookbooks and reference titles are all collected. Books that are read and passed on are at the top of the waste hierarchy — far better than recycling, and far better than landfill.

Toys & Games

Smaller toys, action figures, soft toys and similar items that children have grown out of. Please note we cannot accept bulky ride-on toys, baby bouncers or jigsaws, but many smaller items are a perfect fit.

Kitchenware

Mugs, crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and small kitchen accessories. If you’ve upgraded your kitchen or are simply reducing household clutter after a house move, these everyday items find new homes quickly.

Linen & Textiles

Bed sheets, pillowcases, towels and tablecloths in good, clean condition. Please note we are not able to take duvets, pillows or blankets, so check the condition and type before bagging up.

Household Items

Ornaments, vases, picture frames aside — general household items in working order. Donating them keeps usable goods in circulation and reduces what goes to landfill from Norfolk’s households every year.

How a Norfolk Collection Works

The process is designed to be as straightforward as possible, whether you’re in a terraced house in Norwich, a semi in King’s Lynn or a village just outside Thetford. Here’s how it goes from bag to collection.

1
Book your slot online

Enter your IP or PE postcode to check availability and pick a date that works for you. The booking takes a couple of minutes and you’ll receive a confirmation with your collection details.

2
Fill your bags

Use any sturdy bags — bin bags, carrier bags, whatever you have. If you’re doing a proper clear-out and filling multiple bags, that’s absolutely fine; just make sure each bag is manageable for one person to carry. Overfilling a single bag so it becomes too heavy to lift safely isn’t ideal — split across two bags instead.

3
Leave on your doorstep

On collection day, put your bags outside your front door before the start of your collection window. You don’t need to be home. Our driver will come to you, pick up the bags and that’s your part done.

4
Your items go to good use

Collected items are sorted and resold, with a large percentage of proceeds going to charity. Goods in excellent condition are prioritised for direct reuse — the highest rung of the waste hierarchy — and the rest is handled responsibly.

The Environmental Case for Donating in Norfolk

Reuse matters, and Norfolk is a county where that message lands practically. With nearly a million residents spread across Norwich, the coastal towns and rural areas in between, even modest changes in disposal habits add up to something significant. When clothing is donated rather than thrown away, it avoids the energy and water cost of manufacturing new garments. When kitchenware and household items are passed on rather than skipped, they stay in use rather than heading to a site.

Books deserve a particular mention. Based on estimates from published UK figures such as those from WRAP, reusing a book rather than letting it go to waste avoids the water consumption, CO2 and energy involved in pulping, printing and distributing a new copy. It also avoids the methane that paper and card release as they break down in landfill. A single household sorting through a couple of shelves of unwanted fiction and non-fiction and donating rather than binning those books represents a genuinely meaningful environmental choice — not a symbolic one. Multiply that across the towns and villages of Norfolk and the cumulative benefit is real.

Toys that children have genuinely outgrown are another strong case. Plastic toys involve energy-intensive manufacturing; when they’re in good condition and passed on through a reuse chain, that manufacturing footprint is shared across a longer useful life. The same logic applies to the mugs, bowls and pans sitting unused in kitchen cupboards across Norwich and King’s Lynn — items that required raw materials and energy to produce and that, given another home, can serve that purpose for years more.

“Reducing household clutter doesn’t have to mean adding to landfill. A free doorstep collection turns a clear-out into something genuinely useful — for another family, for a charity, and for the environment.”

Norfolk Collection: Frequently Asked Questions

We collect across the GU, KT, RG, SL, SM or TW postcode areas, which between them cover the vast majority of Norfolk — including Norwich, Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn, Thetford and Dereham, as well as many of the smaller towns and villages across the county. Enter your postcode at the booking stage to confirm availability at your specific address.

There’s no strict upper limit on the number of bags, so a proper household clear-out is absolutely fine. The main thing to keep in mind is that each bag should be light enough for one person to carry comfortably — don’t pack bags so tightly that they become unsafe to lift. If you’re filling a lot of bags, just let us know in the booking notes.

No — you don’t need to be in. Simply leave your bags on your doorstep or in a clearly visible spot at the front of your property before the start of your collection window. Our driver will collect them and you’ll receive confirmation once it’s done.

Items should be in good, clean, usable condition. Clothing should be washed and free from damage; books should be intact with no water damage; kitchenware should be clean and unchipped where possible. Items that are heavily worn, broken or soiled unfortunately can’t be passed on for reuse and should be disposed of separately.

Yes — there are some things outside what we’re able to take. We cannot collect large furniture, white goods, electrical items such as TVs or printers, duvets, pillows, blankets, mattresses, bikes, sports equipment, hazardous materials, or oversized and very heavy items. The item cards above give a good sense of what we do collect, and if you’re unsure about a specific item, it’s worth checking before your collection date.

Convenient donation options genuinely increase the amount people donate. Research consistently shows that when donating requires a special trip — loading bags into a car, finding parking in Norwich or King’s Lynn town centre, queuing — a good proportion of items simply never make it. A free doorstep collection removes that friction entirely. The result is more items donated, more money raised for charity, and less going to waste.
