Darlington Playrooms Tidied: Toys Collected at No Cost

Darlington’s toy cupboards fill up fast — with around 107,000 people living across the town, and families from Hurworth-on-Tees, Middleton St George, Heighington and Cockerton often facing exactly the same problem, it doesn’t take long for good, usable kids’ stuff to outgrow the space available for it. Rather than letting those outgrown toys gather dust or head for the bin, a free doorstep collection with Anglo Doorstep Collections means they go straight to someone who’ll actually get the use out of them — no trip into town, no queue at a charity shop, nothing to pay.

Clear Space, Feel Lighter

A cupboard or playroom freed from toys nobody plays with any more is a small but genuine lift — less clutter underfoot, less to tidy, and a clear-out that actually gets finished instead of stalling halfway.

Funds Good Causes

Once collected, usable toys pass to our charity and reuse partners, and a large percentage of proceeds goes to charity — so a bag of outgrown toys does more than clear a shelf.

Kinder Than Binning

Giving a toy a second home is far gentler on the planet than throwing it out and buying new further down the line — reuse keeps good items in circulation instead of in landfill.

Second Life for Another Child

Soft toys, action figures and building sets that still have plenty of play left in them are reused or passed on to help children and families who need them.

Collected From Your Doorstep

No drop-off, no car boot full of bags — leave everything out and our driver collects it, completely free, wherever you are in Darlington.

Nothing Left Lying Around

Donating as you go, rather than storing bags of outgrown toys in the loft or garage “just in case”, keeps your home tidier and the items themselves out of harm’s way until collection day.

What We Collect

Good-condition children’s toys, ready for their next home

We take a good range of children’s toys and kids stuff: soft toys, dolls, action figures, wooden stacking toys, train sets, construction bricks and similar playthings that toddlers and older children enjoy but grow out of long before the toys themselves wear out. Please note we’re not able to collect larger or specialist toy items — things like doll houses, ride-on toys, board games, bulky toys, ball pits, jigsaws, play gyms, baby swings or baby bouncers fall outside what we can take, so it’s worth keeping those aside for a specialist service instead.

Covering Darlington and the Surrounding Villages

From Cockerton to the edge of the Tees Valley

Darlington isn’t a sprawling city, but between the town centre, Cockerton and the villages that sit just outside it, getting a bag of toys to a drop-off point isn’t always convenient — particularly with young children in tow. A doorstep collection removes that step completely. Our drivers also reach Hurworth-on-Tees, Middleton St George and Heighington, so if you’ve got relatives or neighbours in those areas, the same free service is available to them too.

Darlington and Beyond

From the town centre and Cockerton out to Hurworth-on-Tees, Middleton St George and Heighington — wherever you’re based, we’ll come to your door.

No Minimum or Maximum

One bag or several, it makes no difference — there’s no charge either way, and no quantity you need to reach before we’ll collect.

Better Than the Bin

UK estimates suggest around a million tonnes of reusable household goods are thrown away every year. Keeping toys in use instead saves the raw materials, water and energy that go into making replacements.

The Environmental Case for Darlington

Small choices, fewer bags in County Durham’s landfill

Darlington’s council handles waste collection and disposal for a town of around 107,000 residents, and bulky mixed-material items — plastic, fabric and wood all combined, as most toys are — are exactly the kind of thing that’s awkward to process once it reaches landfill. Diverting toys into reuse instead sidesteps that problem altogether. Based on published UK estimates, including figures from WRAP, reusing toys, kitchenware and bric-a-brac saves the raw materials, water and energy that would otherwise go into manufacturing brand-new versions from scratch. It won’t single-handedly solve County Durham’s waste challenge, but across a town this size, every bag diverted from a bin and into reuse adds up to a genuinely useful reduction in what reaches landfill.

Not Just for Parents

Grandparents, childminders and anyone mid-move

Parents clearing a bedroom before a new baby arrives are the obvious group, but plenty of other households in Darlington end up with toys to pass on too. Grandparents in Heighington or Cockerton who’ve built up a stash for weekend visits often find it’s grown well beyond what’s actually needed. Childminders refreshing their toy box, and anyone packing up a house ahead of a move, regularly discover good-quality kids’ stuff that’s simply been stored rather than used. Moving home in particular is often the moment a loft or cupboard finally gets properly sorted — and toys that have sat untouched through a house move are usually ready to go straight to another family rather than into new storage at the next address.

“Booking takes about two minutes online, and from there it’s out of your hands — the toys go on to a family who’ll genuinely use them, rather than sitting in a box waiting for a decision that never quite gets made.”

Clearing Out More Than Toys?

One visit, several types of donation

A toy clear-out rarely happens in isolation — it’s usually part of a wider tidy-up. You’re welcome to add other items to the same visit: take a look at our pages for clothes, books and household items to see what else goes in the same collection. Every area we cover, including Hurworth-on-Tees, Middleton St George, Heighington and Cockerton, is listed on our collections near you page, so it’s easy to check coverage for friends or family elsewhere in County Durham.
