Bed Sheets and Towels Piling Up in St Albans?

A knotted charity collection bag of donated linen and towels on a front step in St Albans

St Albans households tend to hold onto linen longer than almost anything else in the house — spare sheet sets, towels from a bathroom that’s since been redecorated, tablecloths nobody has unfolded in years. Anglo Doorstep Collections exists to make letting go of all that easy: we collect straight from your doorstep, free of charge, and make sure anything still usable goes on to help someone else rather than sitting in a cupboard indefinitely.

Space You’ll Actually Notice

Clearing out bed linen you’ve been storing “just in case” tends to free up more room than you’d expect, and there’s a genuine satisfaction in a cupboard that finally closes properly again.

Funds for Good Causes

Donated bedding and towels are sold on or redistributed by the causes we work with, and a large percentage of proceeds goes to charity — so your spare linen does real work.

Kinder Than Buying New

Reusing a set of sheets or a stack of towels avoids the water and energy it takes to manufacture replacements — a far lighter footprint than binning and rebuying.

A Second Life for Someone Else

Good-quality linen and towels are redistributed or resold to people who need them, while anything too worn for reuse is directed to textile recycling instead of landfill.

Sets or Single Pieces

A full matching set or just an odd pillowcase that’s lost its pair — both are equally welcome. There’s no need to have a complete set to make a donation worthwhile.

No Need to Be In

We’ll send your collection time slot the evening before, but you don’t have to wait around at home — just leave your bags out and we’ll take it from there.

What We Collect

The bedroom and bathroom items that quietly pile up over the years

We take bedding, bed linen and general bedroom items that have simply outlasted their usefulness in your home — flat sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, bath towels, hand towels, tea towels and table linen among them. These are exactly the things that surface when a grown-up child moves out, a house is sold, an elderly relative’s belongings are sorted, or a spare room finally gets repurposed, and they’re exactly what we’re set up to take away.

Where It Goes, and Why It Matters

Reuse first, recycling only as a last resort

Good-quality bed linen and towels are always kept whole and passed on for resale or redistribution first — a complete, decent set is worth far more to a reuse partner intact than it ever would be broken down. Only items that genuinely can’t be reused are sent for textile recycling, which keeps them out of landfill even when resale isn’t an option.

Nationally, the UK throws away an estimated 920,000 tonnes of textiles every year, which works out at roughly 13 kg per person — and scaled to St Albans’s population of around 72,000, that points to an estimated 936 tonnes of textiles discarded here annually. Manufacturing is thirsty work too: growing and processing the cotton for a single t-shirt uses around 2,700 litres of water, while synthetic fabrics can sit in landfill for decades before they break down at all. These are estimates based on published UK figures, not guarantees, but they explain why keeping usable linen circulating matters. Reusing around a kilogram of clothing or textiles is estimated to avoid 3–4 kg of CO2 compared with producing something new, and a full bag of donated items — typically 8 to 10 kg — can collectively save many thousands of litres of water across everything inside it. For a city the size of St Albans, with nearby Harpenden, London Colney, Park Street and Bricket Wood all generating their own share of unused linen, those small individual decisions add up to something genuinely worthwhile.

Clear the Whole House, Not Just the Cupboard

One visit, several categories, no extra arrangements

A linen clear-out rarely happens on its own — it’s usually part of a wider sort-through, and we’ve built the service around that reality. In the same visit we’re also able to collect books, clothes, toys, household items and kitchenware, so there’s no need to book separately for each type of donation — making the whole process a good deal more sustainable than several smaller, separate trips to drop things off.

Coverage reaches well beyond the cathedral city itself. Alongside St Albans, we regularly collect from Harpenden, London Connoly, Park Street and Bricket Wood — though if you spotted that typo, it should of course read London Colney. Households across all of these places find that a bag of unwanted sheets or towels, still in fair condition, is worth far more donated than discarded. Why Doorstep Collection Suits St Albans

No queues, no parking, no waiting in

Carrying a bulky bag of bedding into a charity shop on a busy St Albans high street is rarely as simple as it sounds — shelf space runs out, parking is awkward at the best of times, and a short drive across town can feel like disproportionate effort for something that should take two minutes. Doorstep collection removes all of that. There’s no minimum amount to put out, nothing to carry anywhere, and no requirement to be home when the driver calls — we’ll confirm your time slot the evening before, and from there it’s simply a matter of leaving your bags somewhere visible outside.

St Albans’s council covers waste and recycling services across the district, but however you choose to dispose of unwanted linen, keeping it in use rather than in the bin is what counts. Every set of sheets or stack of towels that finds a new owner instead of ending up in landfill is one less contribution to local textile waste, and a small part of a wider circular economy across Hertfordshire — one that also helps fund charitable causes along the way. It costs nothing, takes no real effort, and genuinely makes a difference.
