Tiverton, Pass On Your Old Books for Free

Tiverton may be a market town of around 21,000 people rather than a sprawling city, but bookshelves here fill up just as quickly as anywhere else. Between school reading schemes, retirement projects, house moves along the Exe Valley and the general drift of paperbacks that seem to multiply on their own, most homes eventually reach a point where another box of books simply won’t fit. Anglo Doorstep Collections exists for exactly that moment — we come to your door, free of charge, and take your books, CDs, DVDs and music away so you don’t have to find a drop-off point or make a special trip anywhere.

Space and Peace of Mind

Clearing a crowded shelf does more than tidy a room — it’s one of those small jobs that genuinely lifts a house. A guilt-free clear-out, done properly, tends to feel better than the books ever did sitting there unread.

Funds for Good Causes

Every box collected is passed on to charities and reuse partners, with a large percentage of proceeds going to good causes. Titles you’ve finished with become funding for work that matters elsewhere.

Kinder Than Landfill

Giving a book, CD or DVD a second reader or listener is far better for the planet than letting it go to waste — reuse keeps it useful instead of becoming rubbish.

What We Collect

Books, CDs, DVDs and music — no minimum amount, no sorting required

Books of All Kinds

Paperbacks, hardbacks, children’s picture books, cookbooks and reference titles are all welcome, along with course reading from any of Tiverton‘s local schools or colleges.

CDs & Music

Albums and music collections that no longer get played can bring real enjoyment to someone else. If it still plays, it’s worth passing on rather than putting in a drawer.

DVDs & Films

Film collections, box sets and documentaries all have a place too — provided discs are intact and playable, they’re ready to find a new home.

Covering Tiverton and the Surrounding Villages

One driver, one round, towns and villages across the area

Devon County Council’s area stretches well beyond Tiverton’s town centre, and our rounds are built to reflect that. As well as households across Tiverton itself, we regularly collect from Cullompton, Bampton, Sampford Peverell and Halberton, so there’s no need to drive into town with a car boot full of boxes when a free doorstep collection will do the job instead. Pack loosely filled boxes or bags rather than one overstuffed crate — smaller, manageable loads are easier for us to lift and far less likely to split on the doorstep.

Seasonal clear-outs tend to bring in the biggest hauls — a spring tidy-up, a pre-Christmas declutter to make room for new arrivals, or the sorting-out that follows a house move along the Exe Valley. Whatever prompts it, there’s no need to let books sit in the loft for another year when collection is this straightforward.

Who Tends to Book

A few typical reasons Tiverton households get in touch

Long-Time Readers

A household in Bampton working through decades of collected fiction, keen to see well-loved titles reach new readers rather than sit boxed up in a spare room.

Families With Outgrown Favourites

A family in Sampford Peverell clearing picture books and early readers their children have outgrown, so another child nearby gets to enjoy them next.

Movers & Downsizers

A household in Halberton packing up before a move, sorting CDs, DVDs and shelves of books into a few manageable bags ahead of collection day.

One Visit Covers Everything

Books alongside your other donations, in a single trip

Books rarely get cleared out in isolation. Set your boxes next to clothes, toys or kitchenware you’re also passing on, and our driver will take the lot in one visit — no need to book separately for each category. Particularly large clear-outs can be split across more than one visit if needed, just let us know when booking. We’ll text your collection time slot through the evening before your collection day, so you know roughly when to expect the van without having to wait in all morning.

For households just outside town, our collections near you page gives the fuller picture of where else nearby we collect.

What Happens to Your Donations

From your doorstep to new readers across Devon

Charity bags and a box of donated books by a front door in Tiverton

Readable books and working discs are passed to the charities and reuse partners we work with across Devon, where they’re resold or handed directly to new readers, with a large percentage of proceeds going towards good causes. Only items too worn or damaged to be of any use are sent for recycling, and that’s very much the last resort rather than the norm.

There’s a genuine environmental benefit too, worth a moment’s thought. Left in landfill, the paper, card and plastic in books, CDs and DVDs break down slowly and release methane as they go. Reusing them sidesteps that completely — no re-pulping, no fresh print run, no transport for a replacement copy — and published UK estimates, such as those from WRAP, suggest meaningful savings in water and CO₂ for every item kept in circulation rather than remade from scratch. Across Tiverton and the surrounding villages of Cullompton, Bampton, Sampford Peverell and Halberton, that adds up to a small but real contribution toward a tidier area and less unnecessary waste, one shelf at a time.

“For a market town like Tiverton, keeping books and media in circulation rather than letting them go to landfill is a quiet but genuine way to support good causes and cut down on waste.”
