Oxford is a city that lives and breathes the written word, and that means books accumulate here faster than almost anywhere else in the country. Whether you’re a long-term resident whose shelves have quietly reached breaking point, or you’ve just finished a degree and can’t face carting reading-list titles to your next address, Anglo Doorstep Collections offers a simple answer: we come to you, completely free of charge, and collect your unwanted books straight from the doorstep.

Paperbacks, hardbacks, children’s books, cookbooks, DVDs and CDs are all welcome, provided they’re dry and in reasonable condition. Passing them on to someone who’ll genuinely use them is always a better outcome than watching them take up space — or worse, go to waste entirely.

A single bag is just as welcome as a box of twenty volumes — there’s no minimum quantity and no maximum either. Pack your donations in small, manageable loads rather than one heavy crate, and we’ll handle the rest. We accept:

Oxford itself is home to around 152,000 people, and the doorstep model suits the city well — there’s no need to work out a route to a drop-off point when we come directly to you. Beyond the city, we also collect from Abingdon, Kidlington, Witney and Bicester, so households across the wider Oxfordshire area can book in just as easily as anyone living closer to the centre.

The end of the academic year is a particularly good moment to think about a clear-out. Reading-list titles, subject guides and course texts that have done their job are exactly the kinds of books other students and curious readers are glad to find. Books and media rarely tell the full story of a clear-out. Set them out alongside clothes, toys or kitchenware and our driver takes the lot in a single trip. If the volume is particularly large, collections can be split across more than one visit without any difficulty.

What Happens to Your Donations

Every readable title goes directly to the charities and reuse partners we work with, where books are either resold to raise funds for good causes or passed on to new readers who’ll genuinely value them. A large percentage of proceeds goes to charity, so a clear-out from your Oxford home translates into real support for causes that need it. Only items too damaged to be used responsibly go for recycling — and even then, that’s very much a last resort.

There’s a meaningful environmental side to this worth thinking about. When books, CDs and DVDs end up in landfill, the paper, card and plastic they contain break down over time and release methane — a potent greenhouse gas. Choosing to donate rather than discard means none of that material needs to be produced from scratch. Based on published UK estimates, reusing books avoids the water consumption, carbon emissions and transport involved in pulping and printing fresh copies.
