Earth Day 2024
Every year, millions of people across the world get together on Earth Day to celebrate the amazing environmental movement. It originally started in 1970 in the United States of America, and is now marked all around the world.
When is it, and what is it?
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22nd. It showcases the support for environmental protection. It serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts, encourages individuals and communities to take action to safeguard the planet for future generations. The 2024 theme, “Planet vs. Plastics”, aims to raise awareness of the harms of plastic pollution for human and planetary health.
What has Earth Day Achieved?
Since Earth Day began in 1970, it has achieved significant milestones in raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging action to address them. Some of the biggest achievements on Earth Day include:
- Action: Earth Day has been instrumental in spurring legislative action and policy changes aimed at protecting the environment. Examples include the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of landmark environmental laws, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.
- Global Awareness: It has grown into a global movement, mobilising millions of people across the world to participate in environmental initiatives, rallies, and advocacy campaigns. It has helped to elevate environmental issues onto the global agenda and foster international cooperation on issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.
- Educating people on our environment: Played a crucial role in promoting environmental education and increasing public awareness about environmental issues. Schools, universities, and community organisations often organise educational events, workshops, and activities to teach people about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living practices.
- Corporate and Individual Action: It has inspired corporate entities, businesses, and individuals to take action to reduce their environmental footprint and adopt more sustainable practices. Many companies now incorporate environmental stewardship into their corporate social responsibility initiatives, while individuals embrace eco-friendly habits such as recycling, reducing energy consumption, and supporting sustainable products and businesses.
- Continued Advocacy: Serving as a platform for ongoing advocacy and activism on pressing environmental issues. From raising awareness about climate change and biodiversity loss to advocating for renewable energy and conservation efforts. Earth Day mobilises people to take action and advocate for positive environmental change.
Reject Fast Fashion
The fast fashion industry operates on a “race to the bottom” model to produce the greatest number of garments at the lowest price. With cheap production, lowered costs and other pressures around clothing, fashion numbers are staggering: 100 billion garments made annually, 87% ending in landfills or incinerators and only 1% recycled.
