Sunderland’s Unwanted Books — Free Doorstep Collection
A clear-out in Sunderland so often starts with a bookcase that’s quietly been filling up for years — paperbacks two rows deep, a stack of DVDs nobody’s watched since the last house move, CDs from a hi-fi that’s long gone. Rather than letting that lot sit there or hauling it to a charity shop on Fawcett Street, Anglo Doorstep Collections will come straight to your door, free of charge, and take it off your hands in one go.

Resources, Not Rubbish
Your old titles become someone else’s find, rather than landfill — turning a clear-out into something that does real, lasting good.

Covering Sunderland and Beyond
From the city centre out to the coast
Sunderland is home to around 174,000 people, spread from the city centre and the riverside near the Stadium of Light out to the surrounding wards, and a doorstep service suits that spread far better than expecting everyone to find their own way to a drop-off bin. We collect right across the city, and our reach extends out to Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Seaham and South Shields too, so households well beyond the centre can book in with no extra fuss.

Student turnover near the University of Sunderland tends to generate a particular glut of course textbooks, revision guides and reading-list titles each summer, and those are exactly the sort of books other students are pleased to pick up second-hand. If you’re clearing a student let or helping someone move out, a few smaller, lighter bags rather than one overstuffed crate makes collection day far easier for everyone involved.
The Kinds of Clear-Outs We See
Different reasons, same simple process
Lifelong Readers
A household in Houghton-le-Spring working through decades of fiction built up over a lifetime, keen to see well-loved titles find new readers rather than a recycling sack.
Growing Families
A family in Seaham whose children have grown out of their picture books, happy that another child elsewhere will get to enjoy them at just the right age.
Students Moving On
A shared house near the university with a shelf of course books and a drawer of DVDs to pass on — no sorting required, and nothing to pay.
Happy to Collect More Than Books
One driver, one visit, everything sorted
Books rarely sit alone on a clear-out list. A change of wardrobe, a cupboard of outgrown toys or kitchen cupboards you’re finally rationalising can all go out at the same time — set them alongside your books next to clothes, toys or kitchenware and our driver will take the lot in a single visit. Particularly large amounts can be split across more than one collection if needed, just let us know. We’ll send your collection time slot through the evening before, so there’s no guesswork about when to put things out.
We also cover nearby Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Seaham and South Shields — see the full coverage on our collections near you page.

Where Your Donations End Up
Reuse first, recycling only as a last resort
Readable books and working discs go to the charities and reuse partners we work with across Tyne and Wear, where they’re resold or handed straight on to new readers. A large percentage of proceeds goes to charity, so a shelf-clearing session at home genuinely helps fund good causes beyond your own street. Only items too worn or damaged for anyone to use at all are sent for recycling, and that’s very much the exception rather than the rule — reuse is always the first choice, since keeping an item in circulation does more good than breaking it down for materials.
There’s a genuine environmental upside too. Left in landfill, the paper, card and plastic in old books, CDs and DVDs slowly breaks down and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Giving them a second life sidesteps all of that — no fresh pulping, no new printing run, no transport for replacement copies — and, based on published UK estimates such as those from WRAP, that represents a genuine saving in water and CO₂ compared with producing new ones from scratch. It’s one small, practical way a Sunderland household can make its clear-out count for something, rather than adding to landfill or encouraging the kind of dumped items that turn up on verges and back lanes when there’s nowhere easy to take them.
“Every book kept in circulation rather than binned is one less item needing to be pulped, printed and shipped all over again — a small saving that adds up when enough Sunderland households do the same thing.”
