Newport Readers, Pass Your Old Books to a Good Cause

Newport’s shelves rarely stay tidy for long. Between a population of around 159,000, a steady churn of house moves, and families forever swapping one stage of childhood reading for the next, books have a habit of multiplying quietly in corners, landings and under beds. Clearing them out needn’t mean a trip anywhere — a doorstep collection does the job without you lifting more than a box, and it costs nothing at all to arrange.
Book a Free Collection“A shelf cleared of books you’ve already read is a shelf ready for something new — and somewhere, another reader gets the copy you no longer need.”
Second-hand before scrapped
Giving a book, CD or DVD another life is almost always the kinder option, both for your pocket and for the planet.
Buying new and binning old is an easy habit to fall into, but it’s rarely the sensible one. A paperback that’s served its purpose on your shelf still has plenty of life left for somebody else, and the same goes for a DVD boxset or a CD album you no longer reach for. Choosing reuse over replacement means fewer things get manufactured from scratch, and fewer things end up thrown away before their time is really up. It’s a small decision at a household level, but multiplied across a city the size of Newport, it adds up to something genuinely worthwhile.
There’s a practical saving too. Councils, including Newport’s, typically charge for bulky household waste collections, and books, CDs and DVDs piled up in boxes can easily tip a clearout into “bulky” territory. A free charity collection sidesteps that cost entirely — nothing to pay, nothing to arrange beyond booking a slot that suits you.
Why doorstep collection suits Newport
No charity shop queue, no trip to the tip — just a time slot and a doorstep.
Newport spreads from the docks and city centre out towards Caerleon, Rogerstone, Risca and across to Cwmbran, and getting a car boot full of books to a charity shop or recycling centre isn’t always convenient, especially without a car or with young children in tow. A doorstep collection removes that friction altogether. You don’t need to be in when we call — leave everything in a porch, by the step, or wherever’s easiest, and our driver takes it from there. We’ll send your collection time slot the evening before your collection day, so there’s no guessing when to put things out.
What travels well and what doesn’t
Most books and media are welcome, provided they’re dry, complete and still fit to be read, watched or played.
We collect paperbacks and hardbacks, children’s picture books and early readers, cookbooks and reference titles, university textbooks left over from a module or a whole degree, along with DVDs, films, CDs and music albums. A house move near Rogerstone, a student clearout close to one of Newport’s colleges, or simply a family in Risca whose children have grown past their picture books — all of it fits the same straightforward rule: if it’s dry and in reasonable condition, it’s welcome.
What we can’t take matters just as much. Magazines and comics, VHS and cassette tapes, vinyl records or record players, and CD/DVD storage racks all fall outside what we’re able to collect, so it’s worth keeping those aside rather than adding them to the bag. Sticking to books, CDs, DVDs and music keeps the collection running smoothly for everyone.
- Keep books, CDs and DVDs dry and free from damp or damage
- Pack into manageable bags or small boxes rather than one large crate
- Leave discs in their cases where possible so nothing goes astray
- Set items by your door, porch or an agreed spot — no need to wait in
- Combine with any other collection you’ve booked, such as clothes or toys
Sorting, grading and where the value goes
Not every book takes the same path once it leaves your doorstep.
Once collected, books and media are sorted and graded rather than simply bundled together. Titles in good, readable condition are passed to charities and reuse partners across South Wales to be resold or handed straight to new readers, and a large percentage of proceeds goes to charity — turning your old textbooks or paperbacks into genuine funds for good causes. Only the small proportion too worn or damaged to be reused at all is set aside for recycling, and that’s treated as very much a last resort rather than the default.
“Making better use of what already exists on our shelves, rather than constantly buying new, is one of the simplest changes a household can make — and one of the easiest to act on.”
What donating books actually saves
The environmental case for reuse is modest per book, but real, and it scales with every shelf cleared across Newport.
When books, CDs and DVDs are sent to landfill, the paper, card and plastic they’re made from break down slowly and release methane as they go — a greenhouse gas with a far bigger short-term warming effect than carbon dioxide. Keeping them in circulation avoids that fate altogether. Reusing a book means nobody has to pulp fresh paper, run another printing press or transport a newly made copy to a shop shelf, and that translates into a real saving in water and CO₂ compared with producing a replacement from new. Published UK estimates, such as those from WRAP, back this up as a general rule, even though the exact figure for any single book will naturally vary. Across a city of Newport’s size, with households in Caerleon, Rogerstone, Risca and Cwmbran all doing the same, those small savings accumulate into something that genuinely counts.

One collection, several clearouts
Books rarely come out of a cupboard alone, so there’s no reason to book separately.
A clearout changing wardrobes for the season, or a general tidy-up before visitors arrive, often turns up more than just books. If you’ve also got clothes, toys or kitchenware to pass on, set them out together and our driver will take the lot in a single visit — no need for separate bookings or separate wait-ins. Larger households, or anyone clearing a full house move, can split things across more than one visit if needed; just mention it when booking.
Coverage reaches right across Newport and into Caerleon, Rogerstone, Risca and Cwmbran, so wherever in the area you’re based, booking works the same simple way. For the fuller regional picture, our collections near you page covers the towns we reach beyond Newport itself.
