Kids’ Toys in Leicester? We Collect Them Free

Close-up of a box of donated toys waiting on a doorstep in Leicester

With somewhere in the region of 355,000 people calling Leicester home, and young families scattered across every corner of the city from the Golden Mile to Knighton, there’s rarely a house that doesn’t have at least one box of outgrown children’s toys tucked under a bed or stacked in a cupboard. Anglo Doorstep Collections picks those toys straight from your doorstep, free of charge, so you never have to lug a bin bag to a charity shop or wait in for a council bulky-waste van. Book online, leave the bag out, and let someone else get the use out of a toy your own children have long since moved past.

What we can take off your hands, and what we have to leave behind

Children’s toys cover an enormous range of shapes, sizes and materials, and most of what a family accumulates over a few years of growing up is exactly the sort of thing we’re set up to collect. Soft toys, dolls, action figures, building bricks, wooden stacking toys and train sets are all good examples of children’s stuff that finds a second home easily. What we can’t take is more limited than people expect, so it helps to check before you bag everything up together.

Anything on the right-hand side simply isn’t one we’re able to take as part of this service, however good the condition — those fall outside what we collect altogether, so it’s worth setting them aside rather than including them in the bag. Everything on the left goes on to our charity and reuse partners, who put it back into circulation for other households across the county.

Sorting is genuinely simple: check that pieces belonging to a set are together, give anything that’s lived in the garden a quick wipe, and take the batteries out of anything electronic before it goes in the bag. There’s no need to separate toys by age group, and you don’t need to track down the original box — a complete, clean toy is all we’re after. If you’re labelling bags at all, a word on the outside such as “toys” is plenty; there’s no formal labelling system to follow, just enough for our driver to tell what’s what if you’re leaving several bags out together.

Why a doorstep collection beats the alternatives

Driving a boot-load of toys to a charity shop in the city centre, or waiting weeks for a Leicester City Council bulky-waste slot that often comes with a fee attached, is a lot of effort for something that should be straightforward. A free doorstep collection cuts that out completely — you book a date, we send your time slot the evening before, and the toys leave from your own front step. There’s nothing to pay, no minimum amount required, and no need to be home when the driver calls, provided the bag is somewhere accessible.

It’s also simply a kinder way to deal with things than buying new and binning old. Manufacturing a replacement toy uses raw materials, water and energy that reuse avoids altogether, and UK-wide estimates suggest around a million tonnes of reusable household goods are thrown away every year rather than passed on. Toys are a notable part of that figure, given how quickly children grow out of them while the toys themselves are often barely marked. Giving a toy a second life in another Leicester household, or over in Oadby, Wigston, Birstall or Syston, keeps it doing its job for years longer than it would in a single family.

Reusing toys, kitchenware and bric-a-brac saves the raw materials, water and energy that go into making replacements from scratch — small decisions, repeated across thousands of households, that add up to a genuinely lighter footprint.

Who tends to book us in and around Leicester

It isn’t only parents clearing a playroom before a new baby arrives. Grandparents in Birstall or Syston who’ve kept toys in for weekend visits often reach the point where the cupboard simply won’t hold any more, and childminders topping up what they offer the children in their care are regularly left with good toys that no longer fit their rotation. Anyone emptying a property — whether that’s downsizing, sorting a late relative’s house, or just finally dealing with a loft full of things the kids left behind years ago — usually finds a surprising number of toys mixed in among everything else, and those are exactly the sort of item this service is built for.

There’s a cumulative effect to all this that’s easy to underestimate. One family’s donated toy box might not look like much on its own, but across a city the size of Leicester, repeated week after week, those individual decisions add up to a steady flow of good, usable toys moving into households that need them rather than into landfill. It’s one of the more practical habits a household can build towards being genuinely sustainable — not a single grand gesture, but a willingness to pass things on rather than let them sit unused or get thrown out.

Combining toys with the rest of a clear-out

Toy clear-outs rarely happen in isolation — they tend to come alongside a wider tidy-up of the house. You’re welcome to add other items to the same booking: have a look at our pages for clothes, books and household items to see what else goes out on the same visit. We also collect from Oadby, Wigston, Birstall and Syston, and every area we cover is listed on our collections near you page, so you can check whether a friend or relative elsewhere in Leicestershire falls within reach too.

A large percentage of proceeds from items that go on to be sold goes to charity, which means a decision as small as bagging up an old train set does more than just clear space at home — it supports work well beyond your own street, while keeping good toys out of the bin and in use for another few years yet.
