Winnie’s Story

Winnie is a very special little girl who has had so much to endure from the moment she was born in December 2014. She wasn’t expected to survive past the first few days of her life, after doctors discovered cysts on her brain and she went into heart failure. Winnie is a very special little girl who has had so much to endure from the moment she was born in December 2014. She wasn’t expected to survive past the first few days of her life, after doctors discovered cysts on her brain and she went into heart failure. However, after three and a half months in hospital and undergoing heart surgery, brave Winnie was able to go home with her parents.

Fiona, Winnie’s Mum said “The day we were able to take her home, we felt overwhelmingly proud and thankful.”

The family have received support and care from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) since early 2015 and are regular visitors to Milton Hospice. The all-encompassing support the family have recieved has been crucial in helping them to navigate the complexities of parenting a seriously ill child, including multiple surgeries, epilepsy, and the eventual discovery of a rare genetic condition.

EACH has cared for the whole family, ensuring that Winnie’s sisters, Molly and Wanda, are also supported. Milton hospice is now a special place for family bonding and making cherished memories, as well as medical support and respite. It has been essential in helping the family find moments of joy and connection amidst the challenges.

Fiona said: “EACH has been a big part of our lives, right from the beginning.”
